Li Shuang

For more than four decades, Li Shuang has developed one of the most singular artistic practices in contemporary Chinese art. As the only female founding member of the legendary Stars Group (Xing Xing)—China’s first independent avant-garde art movement after the Cultural Revolution—her life and work have unfolded alongside the profound social and cultural transformations of modern China. Throughout her career, Li Shuang has consistently resisted fixed identities. Her paintings are neither political manifestos nor autobiographical narratives; instead, they explore freedom, memory, vulnerability, and the search for an authentic human presence.
